Chapter 14

When Tessa came out of the bathroom, I was relieved to see that she had a smile on her face. Of course, I was still worried about my dad, and I was glad I told her the truth, but a part of me feared that I had brought the whole mood down. I recalled her worrying about the same thing the night before, but it seemed that she and I were capable of discussing heavy topics without destroying each other’s day. In fact, I felt better than I had in a long time, finally having someone else to talk to about my missing father. Mack had been there for me as best he could the last couple of days but was too close to the situation, same as me.

Having an outside perspective was nice, and although I still had my doubts about this rescue dog idea, it warmed my heart that Tessa was willing to go out of her way to help at all.

“You hungry?” I asked, getting to my feet. “I was thinking about going out to dinner. There’s no food here.”

“I’m starving, actually,” she said. “I was home all day with Sean, who has food poisoning, and I didn’t want to make him sick by cooking something or eating in front of him, so I’ve only had some orange juice and saltines.”

“That’s nothing! We need to get some food in you.” I took her hand. “Where do you want to go?”

“We can go anywhere,” she said, but as we stepped out onto the deck, she took her hand back. “The only thing is we can’t be seen around town holding hands or anything. Someone might tell my brother, and that would be bad.”

“You really think the news would get back to him?”

She laughed. “I thought you said you were from here… You must know how fast things like that get spread around. Someone will see us together. They’ll stop my brother in the store tomorrow and ask him who his sister’s new boyfriend is. I can see it playing out in my head right now, and now that I am thinking about it, I’ve changed my mind. We shouldn’t go out at all.”

“But you’re starving,” I said. “And I’m sure as long as we don’t show any PDA, that nobody will even pay attention to us.”

She shook her head. “We can’t risk it. Let’s order take-out and bring it back to the boat.” I frowned, but she didn’t let up. She stepped closer and stared up at me with those gorgeous eyes. “C’mon, it’ll be romantic. We can eat on the deck and watch the sunset.”

I sighed but ultimately agreed. “Okay, fine. If that’s what you want to do, then that’s what we’ll do. But we don’t get any service out here, so I’m going to have to walk to the edge of the docks to make the call and put an order in. Is it okay if you come with me, or is that even too close to town for comfort?”

She rolled her eyes.
